About DUROD

It's a Core, not a part.

An endpin is the last thing between a cello and the floor, and the first thing the player's sound has to travel through. DUROD builds that part as if it were the instrument itself.

How DUROD started

DUROD's founder is a carbon composite innovator. His work is industrial: structures for aircraft and comparable applications, where carbon fiber has to behave exactly as predicted or not at all.

Then, in conversation with players, he learned something he had not expected. A cello endpin can change how a cello sounds.

What followed was not a product launch but a long series of experiments. Sixty endpins were built and tested — different materials, different constructions, different combinations — in search of the one that served the instrument best. DUROD exists because that search found an answer worth making.

The brand launched in September 2019 at Mondomusica in Cremona, Italy, the international gathering for string instrument makers, dealers and players. It was the first time DUROD endpins were shown publicly.

The name

DUROD joins two words. DURO for strength and durability. ROD for stability and support. Together they describe what we expect a string instrument component to do: hold the instrument steady, and carry its sound without taking anything away from it.

What we make

We apply advanced carbon composite technology to string instrument components. Our endpins pair a carbon fiber body with a metal core, because each material contributes something the other cannot.

Carbon refines the cello's sound, making it clearer and more focused. The metal inside enhances the instrument's resonance, providing a rich volume. Change which metal sits inside the carbon and the character of the result changes with it, and that is the choice we put in the player's hands.

How the hybrid spike works

Every part of a DUROD endpin, button, spike and pin, is made in Korea.

The range

  • Carbon hybrid cello endpins — EP-C100, EP-C200, EP-C300 and EP-C400. Four spike materials, two lengths, with or without a button.
  • Full carbon cello endpin — EP-C010, in carbon tube or carbon rod.
  • Double bass endpin — EP-B100. Carbon fiber with a brass rod core, sizes 29 to 33 mm, built to order.
  • Violin endpin — EP-V100, metal hybrid.
  • Cello stopper — ST-C100, with brass on the top surface.
